How to Style a Pair of Men's Skinny Jeans

Every man should have a pair of skinny jeans. They are a wardrobe staple that can take you from day to evening. But how you may ask? Here are a few styling suggestions.

Different Styles and Shapes

Skinny jeans aren't as straightforward as you'd think... If you pop into a specialist jean shop, or even just your regular high street go-to for clothes, the sales staff will question you about the kind of skinny jeans you're after. Ever heard the terms cigarette jeans and drainpipe jeans? Well, the former are a style of jeans that are so tight they seem almost painted on. They are tight from top to bottom with now flair. This style is known to be popular within the "punk" community. The latter, however, is tight until the lower leg where, instead of tapering, the fit is straight and so often baggier at the bottom. There are other styles, such as the stovepipe and pegs but these don't differ dramatically.

Work Outfits

Depending on the office and the industry, jeans are now often an acceptable choice of outfit, provided they're not ripped, bleached or covered in logos ("new" industries, such as the media are more accepting towards the jeans trend). It's generally thought that dark denim or very light denim are the most appropriate tones for an office.

At work, style your jeans with a smart-casual checked shirt or polo shirt. These are comfortable choices that add a touch of professionalism to your look. Instead of trainers, wear a pair of leather brogue-style shoes. For chillier weather, throw on a knitted cardigan or jumper for a modern retro look that will score many cool points. You can also substitute the cardigan with a blazer for a more sophisticated look. You'd be surprised how good it looks teamed with a pair of jeans.

Casual Outfits

Tight-fitting jeans are the ultimate wardrobe essential for casual occasions. As such a versatile item, they look great thrown together with pretty much anything. For a striking look, choose a T-shirt with a graphic image or words printed on it. Add funky accessories like a leather belt and vintage look trainers or a pair of leather shoes. For a slouchy look wear a snood or scarf. Top off the look with an edgy leather jacket if you find it's cold outside, or just reach for your trusty knitted jumper or cardigan again. Scottish or Nordic woolen jumpers look fantastic paired with skinny jeans.

Evening Outfits

While you won't get away with wearing jeans to a formal occasion, you can still wear them to most bars, clubs and other social hotspots like art galleries. Team a pair of mens skinny jeans with a crisp, long-sleeved classic shirt and accessorise with a bow tie. Invest in a smart blazer to throw on, and a pair of patent shoes. The look is sexy and adheres well to the modern geek chic trend.
